The Effect of Over-Flirting

When strangers cannot be ignored, their flirting can bypass traditional commitment biases and have an effect. In a study conducted in 2022, 130 individuals in committed relationships interacted online with an attractive stranger who either flirted or engaged in a neutral conversation.

Participants provided implicit and explicit evaluations of their romantic partners. Results indicated that experiencing flirtation from an attractive individual altered people’s perception of their partner, leading them to judge them as less attractive and more negatively than those who engaged in neutral conversation.
