It’s funny how one of the most iconic scenes in the mob-home movie was unscripted. That’s the simple beauty of having Joe Pesci featured in the film and a director like Martin Scorsese who’s ready to acknowledge his actors’ inventive minds.
According to Pesci’s costar, Ray Liotta, the scene was based on Pesci’s personal story. Apparently, as a young waiter, he had complimented a mobster by saying he was funny, which the other guy didn’t take so well. Scorsese fell in love with this anecdote and decided to keep it. Furthermore, he kept this change a secret between himself and the two actors to get genuine reactions from supporting actors.
