Something as small as a toothpick wouldn’t need decorative details because it would be difficult to notice them. Still, companies add grooves to the non-pointy side of this tool, which has a different yet brilliant purpose.

According to NPR, Japanese toothpicks traditionally have grooves, which signal the spot that needs to be broken off to show that a piece has already been used. This can also serve as a rest so the soiled part wouldn’t be left on the tabletop.
