Many trench coats we see have this back belt, but we don’t know what it is for. Sure, they give the wearer a nice silhouette, but there must be something more about this. Indeed, this seemingly useless feature was quite functional many years ago.

According to Belgian Dandy, the half belt called martingale was born out of necessity. They were usually worn by military personnel, who also used coats as blankets. So when they needed to get up from rest, they would insert the extra fabric in the belt so they could walk without dragging their coats.
