Surely, we have all wondered why coins have rough edges while others don’t. We simply can’t say that this is for aesthetic purposes because of how small the detail is. Well, back in the day, it had a practical reason. Criminals had the brilliant idea of shaving coins, called clipping, to create another coin.

So what authorities did was to add ridges to the edges of the coins so that if there were no ridges on the sides, it would mean that these had been clipped.
