Golf Dimples Have A Purpose

Dimpled balls have become golf’s signature, but this wasn’t always the case. Smooth balls were previously used for this sport, but analysts noticed how they had a problematic performance. Scientific American found that the smooth spheres travel only around half of the distance covered by a dimpled ball.

The tiny indentations are placed to add turbulence, which decreases drag, thereby increasing the coverage. The aim is to let air layers stick to the ball during high-speed flying for a long time.
