In 1939, a horse was killed during the filming of the 1939 Western movie “Jesse James,” after it was allegedly blindfolded and led off a cliff, falling to its death. This wouldn’t fly today as the American Humane Association (AHA) now oversees the treatment of animals in films and TV shows, ensuring their safety.
The AHA requires that all animals be handled and transported safely and that all stunts involving animals be approved in advance. They also monitor animals for signs of distress during filming and can shut down filming if necessary.
