Not surprisingly, many other animals were hurt, maimed, and killed while making old Hollywood movies. The 1936 Warner Bros. film “The Charge of the Light Brigade” used the completely unethical method of trip wiring (the running W) to get horses to “trip” on camera and fall during a charging scene.

The filmmakers are said to have trip-wired 125 horses, and as many as 25 of them could have died or been put down because of it. Thankfully, in modern movies, horses are trained to flop over on command onto mattresses, ensuring their safety.
