It is estimated that over 100 horses died during the filming of the 1925 silent film “Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ,” some from injuries sustained during the dangerous chariot racing, and others were tragically shot after being injured in other scenes.
The American Humane Association (AHA) was not founded until 1954, so there were no animal safety regulations in place during the filming of this movie. However, they have since condemned the cruelty that occurred and have worked to improve animal welfare in the film industry.
