Director William Friedkin reportedly used unconventional methods on the set of the 1973 Hollywood movie “The Exorcist,” including firing guns and blasting unsettling music before takes to make the actors look more startled and allegedly slapping them to make them look angry.
Actress Ellen Burstyn (Chris MacNeil in the movie) permanently injured her back in a scene where her character was thrown to the ground despite William being warned that she was being pulled too hard. He later apologized for his behavior, but Ellen still feels the effects of her injury to this day.
