Hollywood filmmaker Stanley Kubrick was known for his unorthodox methods, and his treatment of actors in “A Clockwork Orange” was no exception. When he learned of actor Malcolm McDowell’s fear of snakes, he introduced a pet snake to his character.

But the psychological games didn’t stop there. The iconic eye-clamp scene posed a real danger. During the first take, the clamps accidentally scratched Malcolm’s cornea. The “doctor” on set was an actual doctor, as Stanley was willing to risk McDowell’s eyesight for authenticity.
