The 1982 German adventure film “Fitzcarraldo” remains infamous for its troubled production. Set in Peru, it used Amazon Indigenous people as extras, resulting in at least 30 deaths due to malaria and dysentery, as reported by The Guardian. Director Werner Herzog denied responsibility for these deaths.
Furthermore, Werner’s tumultuous relationship with lead actor Klaus Kinski is well-documented. Werner confessed to The New York Times in 1999 to attempting to set Klaus’s house ablaze with him inside, thwarted only by Kinski’s dog. Marred by tragedy and exploitation, the movie tarnished its own legacy.
