The Shining Stanley Hotel

The exterior images of the hotel featured in Stanley Kubrick’s thrilling classic “The Shining” were captured at Mount Hood, Oregon’s Timberline Lodge. However, the inspiration for the hotel featured in the movie was the historic Stanley Hotel in Colorado.

The Stanley Hotel is a 140-room structure next to the Rocky Mountain National Park that’s part of the National Register of Historic Places. The fictional Overlook Hotel, introduced in Stephen King’s novel “The Shining,” was modeled after this former all-American health retreat.
