Dr. Stanley Green, a Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of British Columbia, explains that when a dog lies down to sleep and begin to dream—yes, they do that too—its muscles will relax, often leading to the side sleeping position.

This sleeping posture is perfectly normal and even shows that a dog feels relaxed and comfortable in its environment. It’s also the most likely position for dogs to reach REM sleep.
