Dyeing Easter Eggs Was A Pagan Tradition
While egg painting has been associated with Christianity, it turns out that the tradition has pagan roots. Eggs were seen as a symbol of new beginnings, a fitting representation of springtime.
But, as with many customs, the Church put its spin on things. Legend has it that in the 1200s, King Edward I of England ordered 450 painted eggs to give as Easter gifts. From there, the practice spread across Europe and beyond, taking on new meanings along the way.
