William Schrafft Brought Jelly Beans to The Troops

Did you know that back in the 1860s, jelly beans were used to support the civil war troops? The earliest known appearance of a jelly bean was an 1861 advertisement for William Schrafft of Boston that promoted sending jelly beans to soldiers in the Union Army during the Civil War.

The idea was a hit, and soon jelly beans became a staple in every soldier’s rations. Fast forward a few years, and Gustav Goelitz took the reins, starting a candy store that forever changed the face of jelly beans.
