The White House Easter Egg Rolling Tradition Started in 1878.
The White House Easter egg rolling is a popular annual event. But, what currently appears to be a large-scale phenomenon began on a much smaller scale in the 1800s. In 1873, President Rutherford B. Hayes signed an order that shifted the tides. He stated that any youngsters who came to the White House to roll Easter eggs downhill would be permitted.
While subsequent presidents were not required to follow this practice, they did, and it has been popular ever since.
