Box Office Bombs That Drove Studios Out of Business

Sonic the Hedgehog, 2020

What happens when the movie-makers take a few liberties redesigning an already beloved video-game character? Spoiler Alert! It does not end well.

Sonic is a popular video game character, and it was subsequently decided to release a film based on it. 2019 saw the release of the trailer, directed by Jeff Fowler. The backlash from the fans was almost instantaneous, given the terrible animation of the Hedgehog and how drastically different the whole look was. The trailer was pulled from the market, and the character was redesigned. As a result, the animators of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog,’ Moving Picture Company, had to shut down.

If a formula works then, it is common sense not to change it because the success of a project depends on it. ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ might have turned out a commercial success after its release. Still, due to negative reviews from fans on redesigning the character, the animation company closed down, this resulted in many people losing their jobs.
