Box Office Bombs That Drove Studios Out of Business
It’s A Wonderful Life, 1946
The 40s was a decade to remember in the film industry, and among the classics it produced, was ‘It’s A Wonderful Life,’ a heartwarming Christmas story about a man who lost all hope in life.
Liberty Films spent a lot of money to make this vintage movie a reality, but it fell flat in the box office after earning only half of the movie’s entire budget. If that wasn’t enough, it was released at an unusual schedule. Christmas movies are more well-received when they are launched along with the season, so when this picture was released in the summer of July, people found it odd and skipped it instead.
It proved too much for the company, and the losses made it difficult for them to bounce back. The ending for Liberty Films may not be as pleasant as the film’s title, but at least this particular production still found popularity years after its release.
