Box Office Bombs That Drove Studios Out of Business

Titan A.E., 2000

‘Fox’ has always been a winner in the film industry with numerous hits over the years. But the animated adventure movie, ‘Titan A.E,’ which released at the turn of the millennium, made them seriously review their ways.

Costing a thumping $90 million for its excessive computer-generated imagery, but raking in only $36 million, the sci-fi film proved to be a huge miss. Apparently, having America’s sweethearts, Drew Barrymore, and Matt Damon voicing the leads wasn’t enough to save this film’s opening weekend, at the least. With continuous low rankings, the production giant actually made the decision to close its newly formed anime arm, ‘Fox Animation Studios,’ for good.

The plot revolving around the spaceship Titan, in a ravaged Earth, may have flunked at the box office, but it received numerous accolades for the ahead-of-its-time graphics, editing, and other theatrics. It even contended for the ‘Best Sci-Fi Film’ at the 2000 Saturn awards!
