Box Office Bombs That Drove Studios Out of Business

How Do You Know, 2010

The seemingly harmless romantic comedy turned out to be the most disappointing release of 2010. The film had the right formula for a blockbuster, but something went wrong.

‘How Do You Know’ portrayed a love triangle between the roles essayed by a stellar cast, including Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, and Paul Rudd. It was written and directed by James Brooks, a man who was considered to have a Midas touch as he also curated ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ and ‘The Simpsons.’ All of the A-listers came with a hefty price tag, and the combined salary of these celebrities alone took up half of the budget. A lukewarm response from the audience and meek ratings did not help the film, and it flopped.

A movie with a budget of $100 million, giving most of it away as the salaries of actors and director, is a sure shot recipe for disaster. Precisely what happened with ‘How Do You Know’! The picture failed to generate enough excitement and managed to earn only $48.7 million.
