Box Office Bombs That Drove Studios Out of Business

The Lone Ranger, 2013

In the film, Johnny Depp’s role as Tonto was captivating, and Armie Hammer was a treat to watch on-screen. At first glance, ‘The Lone Ranger’ looks like the kind of movie to break records. Instead, it lost over $150 million for ‘Walt Disney.’

Budgetary concerns arose throughout the shooting period, and finally, the $250+ million production cost was recovered with great difficulty. The stars themselves, including Depp and Hammer, were subjected to 20% salary cuts, till ‘Walt Disney’ could get things back on track. It easily got a spot among Disney’s most significant fails, when vice president Davis Hollis, called the film ”very disappointing.”

The release dates were changed multiple times as well since production kept dragging with many delays. Despite it all, the amazing visual artistry in the feature was rewarded with two Oscar nominations, and critics even compared it to the western film ‘Wild Wild West.’
