Box Office Bombs That Drove Studios Out of Business

Life of Pi, 2012

The ‘Life of Pi’ was a blockbuster hit globally, earning praises from top critics for its stellar special effects and unique story. Nominations from prestigious award-giving bodies like the Academy and Golden Globe poured to recognize the film.

Amidst all the accolades, the company responsible for its success was facing financial problems. Rhythm and Hues Studios were stuck in a rut after the film’s production, and they were unable to get their share of the $600 million profit. It became such a huge issue that the studio was forced to quit and file for bankruptcy just a year after the motion picture was put out.

Since ‘Life of Pi’ was a high-budget movie with a lot of people working as cast and crew, the expenses were too much. Closing shop might feel like the end of the world, but ultimately, Rhythm and Hues Studios was left with no choice.
