Box Office Bombs That Drove Studios Out of Business
Mortal Engines, 2018
Need we say what a mastermind, ‘The Lord of the Rings’ director, Peter Jackson is? Most of us would bet his screenplay alone would guarantee a blockbuster hit, but that was not the case with ‘Mortal Engines.’
Directed by Academy award-winning Christian Rivers, bagging years worth of experience from storyboarding for ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy, the movie had all the ingredients to become a new trademark franchise. Unfortunately, the post-apocalyptic world in the film faced another doom when it made only $83 million against the $250 million production costs. Critics blamed a ‘lack of personality’ in the plot, and it seemed like the public barely cared for the book on which it was based.
Maybe it’s best not to spend millions in excess for a film adaptation of a personal favorite book series, especially when there’s barely any evidence to show that the public would love it as much as you do. Being labeled among the biggest box-office failures of 2018 is certainly not what the makers wanted.
