Box Office Bombs That Drove Studios Out of Business
One from the Heart, 1982
A pioneer in the new Hollywood filmmaking movement of the ‘70s, director Francis Ford Coppola could do no wrong in any true movie fan’s eyes back then. So when his musical romance ‘One from the Heart’ took a blow and lost over $25 million, it was a hard pill to swallow.
The doomer here was the fact that Coppola wanted to try out technological advances on-screen, which increased the initial $15 million budget to a staggering $26 million. According to critics, it might have worked in his favor if the characters weren’t so flawed and unlikeable. The biggest blow came when the celebrated director went bankrupt along with his production arm, Zoetrope.
It is interesting to note that after its negative reception back in the ‘80s, recent critics acclaim the movie’s visual appeal and give more credit to Coppola’s genius style. This gives new meaning to the saying ‘beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.’
