55 Epic On and Off-the-Field Football Scandals That Ruined Careers and Shocked Fans

Pottsville Maroons Were Stripped of Their Title for Playing in an Illegal Game

The Pottsville maroons came into being just after WWI, at a time when American football was slowly gaining stature as a sport. Founded in 1920, the team ended its 1925 season with the best record in the NFL.

Just after the Maroons clinched the title, they took part in an ‘illegal’ game. Cited as a rule violation, they were stripped of their title. Joseph Carr, then president of the NFL, awarded the trophy to the second-placed Chicago Cardinals. This ‘stolen crown’ controversy refuses to die down even today.
